Jerry can holder
« on: January 28, 2011, 11:15:28 AM »
Hi all

bought a Mig welder this week and here is the first project to come out of the garage since buying the welder. i bought the Lincoln 180 mig and seems pretty good so far.

this is my Jerry can holder for the outback icons tour. have tried to keep the holder as light as possible and was made from scrap i salvaged from an old steel pallet someone was throwing out.

cheers

hi mavro

there is a steel strap at the bottom so the jerry can can't fall through. it is also a snug fit. i will also fit some padding and an ocky strap to stop any vibration causing wear on the jerry can. once it is fitted back on the car i will move number plate light and number plate.

cheers

Hi,

Some people fit a small chain, inside a big bore garden hose type tube to stop the rattles, with a paddlock to stop then being nicked. :)

Looks good Dave.

Thanks Terry

sh*ts me how we have to lock everything up..... but will probably end up putting some sort of lock on it.

struggled with the design for a while but after playing around come up with this design. i know i could have just bought one and welded it on but that goes against the Moke way of DIY I believe.

looks neat 71 but my only concern is the thickness of the mounting plates on the bottom, they will have the 20 or kg's
bouncing up and down for a couple of thousand k's which could fatigue the metal and break.
you could run a bit of angle iron under neath it for extra strength

just my 2c worth ;D

HI Mavro,

Mate run another bracing around the bottom, make it slightly larger than the other one, then use rubber buttons instead of padding, although jerry cans are tough, the constant jarring will split the jerry or it will rub through. Be also mindfull that a full jerry and an empty jerry behave differently when exposed to the climates, you will find the jerry will expand slightly in the sun, some may say to open it to releive the pressure but it gets rather messy as petrol will launch out of the can if done incorrectly.
